Wanted & Police

Stars, tickets, arrests, chases, and how the city keeps cops and crooks balanced.

The star ladder

Every crime adds wanted stars, up to 5. Stars fade about every 6 min: faster with no police nearby, and frozen while a cop is within about 50 blocks. Lying low genuinely works, just slowly.

Everybody glows

Every player glows in the world, so a chase is always readable. Police glow blue, civilians white, and wanted players shift from yellow to gold to red to dark red as their stars climb.

Anatomy of a chase

  1. 1

A crime happens. Crime alerts, with the location, go out to every officer who has /pa switched on.

  2. 2

Officers close in. They track the suspect with /gpstrack and call in /backup.

  3. 3

The arrest. The officer gets within about 3 blocks, right-clicks with the Stick, and holds the cuff for 3 s (4 s at 5★) without being hit or drifting out of range.

  4. 4

The suspect has options. Bribe, run, fight, or be freed later by a friend. Arrests at 4★ and 5★ pay the officer and count toward rank.

The evasion bounty

The city balances itself

The server watches police versus criminal numbers. If the police are outnumbered, robbery payouts shrink and every officer gets a bonus. If the cops dominate, payouts rise and criminals get a bonus. The underdog always has an edge, and balance messages are broadcast now and then.

Police ranks

  1. 1Cadet

  4. 4Senior Officer
  5. 5Corporal
  6. 6Sergeant
  7. 7Lieutenant
  8. 8Captain
  9. 9Deputy Chief
  10. 10Chief

Daily pay grows with rank, from $500 as a Cadet to $15,000 as Chief. Rank comes from arrests and tickets (/policerank).

The rules of the badge

  • Cops can't fish, can't do holdups and can't buy drugs.
  • The illegal-kill fine: killing someone who hasn't attacked you costs $10,000, and grows each time.
  • Paid /patrol routes pay $5,000 on arrival.
  • Confiscating a drug plant pays $5,000 per plant.
